Baby Diamond Jewelry
Q.My SIL is pregnant and due in May. At dinner a few weeks ago with the family, I learned about what I felt was a horrifying new trend. After the birth, the husband is to present his wife a gift of jewelry. The more difficult the pregnancy, the better the jewelry. But, the more the husband has helped, the smaller it gets. Is this for real? Has anyone else heard of this Bribe For A Baby(tm)?
A.Never heard of that with the kind of restrictions you mention (less help=bigger jewelry) but I have heard of women receiving "mother's necklaces" or rings upon the birth of a baby. Usually, they contain the birthstone of the kid. Nope. It's customary for the mother to decide the name of the baby (or at least have a bigger say in the decision) and that's it. The jewelry industry is banking on it. Some company has a series of ads that depict men giving gold and/or diamond jewelry to women in different situations: engagement ('how else can three months salary last a lifetime?'), anniversary ('show her you'd marry her all over again'), graduation, and one where a woman holding a baby in a hospital bed gets a BIG bracelet. It is like the greeting card industry... if sales go flat create new holidays.
