ACC Jewelry Degree opinions?
Q.A friend of mine's daughter graduates from HS this year and is looking at the Assoc. Degree in jewelry from ACC. It basically trains you in repair, casting and design. He thinks it would be good fit for her as she is artsy etc. but is worried as a career choice it wouldn't pay much and seems to be mainly a male career choice- not sure that should be aconcern in Austin though. Any jewelers on here have an opinion or anyone been there done that?
A.Jewelry design is hardly a male dominted field. I design beaded jewelry, and over half the beaders that I know personally are female. Most gem carvers are male, but women do dominate the actual design areas, at least the ones that win contests! Honestly, the field is heavy in competition so she's gonna have to be very good and very original and work damned hard to succeed at it, but I ran into one mosaic designer that follows the gem shows that grosses over $500,000.oo per year, and one guy that works primarily with black opal and white gold intarsia that sells his necklaces for about $75,000.oo each. Thar's gold in that thar industry, no pun intended
