What are some good ways to display jewelry?Q.Thanks for all the help you have given me in the past. I am working on plans for a display booth. I need something for both indoor and outdoor sales. What do you recommend? What are some good ways to display jewelry? How about small (2-3inch) figurines? Christmas ornaments? Decorated eggs? Do you just use a table? Or do you have a walk in type area? or table with things hanging behind you? Right now I am making a variety of things in several styles. Do you think I should focus on one thing per event? If not, how do you handle displays when you have a variety of things? Obviously shiny Christmas ornaments don't have much in common with wizards and dragons. A.I like an upright display for jewelry better than the horizontal plexiglass cases so many use. My customers frequently voice their appreciation for being able to stand normally to look instead of having to cantilever themselves over some low display case. I card the jewelry and put velcro dots on the backs of the cards and stick them to my display panels. The panels should be covered with a loopy fabric like low, loop-pile carpet or felt. There's also special fabric made just for velcro tha I plan to use when I make new displays as the felt I have been using tends to clog the velcro hooks after a lot of use. I made my display for compactness (I was doing shows out of a Honda CRX!) and speed of set-up/tear-down. The panels are made like very shallow drawers, standing on end. The top part slides down into the base and is held up with two bolts and wingnuts. Extended, they are about 6 feet tall and just a little over 3 feet when closed. Panels are attached in pairs with angle brackets and bolts. At night, I can leave all the jewelry on the panels and lower the upper display section into the birch plywood base (The bottoms are plain, oiled wood - I wanted a clean look - but could be decorated somehow or even used for more display space though customers would have to crouch for a good look.) and lock it down out of sight. Also, I can put foam sheets over the jewelry when I lower the top into the base and transport the whole shebang without removing the jewelry. If I have the panels pre-loaded with jewelry I can set-up/tear-down in under 10 minutes - add another 5 or so for the EZ-Up and walls and 2 or 3 more for setting up the cash desk and chair and you'll understand why potters and glass blowers hate me so much! If security is a concern, you could easily put plexiglass doors on a display like this. I leave mine open since people are more likely to buy if they can touch my stuff. For the small figurines, you could do the very same type of display and add rows of shallow shelves or a letterbox type of arrangement in the top panel. For the ornaments, same setup would work with wires or perforated metal or wood strips running across to hang them from. The eggs would work in the same deal as the figurines if they're in bases or if you put holes or divots in the shelves/nooks to stand them in. The only table I use is a rather tall cash desk I made to display a catalog and business cards, hide all my junk under, and write out reciepts. The height is made for a tall directors chair and is great for customers to write checks on without stooping. I have nothing hanging in the back of the booth, but I recommend (and plan to do eventually) one or more LARGE photos of your work, since you do small items, so potential customers can see what you have at a distance and will be more likely to come in rather than just pass by. Also a nice sign with your name and/or logo for identity. I've found that I get more respect if my body of work has a unified appearance but that is boring as hell. Still, most of the shows I do are very tightly juried so I do narrow my focus. Besides, from my experience, a booth with too many different styles and/or media tends to look junky and often gets passed by without a close look. I do much better sales/traffic wise since I've stopped displaying too many diverse things.
