Q.Why is carrying a baby not carrying? What's the difference between a pocket and a necklace or belt? How is manipulating a combination lock not working? Why does Orthodox Judaism seem like a lifelong struggle *against* the laws, rather than the joyful acceptance of them that it nominally is?
A.What's the difference between carrying (which is forbidden) and wearing (which is permitted)? It's not always clear. A necklace is decorative; jewelry is generally permitted (although it's arguable whether a key could be considered jewelry, and many people prefer not to rely on this). A belt is functional; without it my pants would fall down. (Notice from my earlier post that I use the key as the belt buckle specifically; without the key the belt wouldn't stay closed.) Everyone has a spin on other people's religions. I was speaking to some friends who are are Indian/Pakistani Muslims who had a book on Hindus who don't follow their religion's tenets. In fairness, they also allowed as to how there were some Muslims who didn't follow the straight and narrow either.
