a wedding for college students on tight budgets .

Q.I am a 23 year old senior in college and will be graduating in August. How do I plan a wedding with my fiancee still in school and me working? We have the problem of money because he won't be making very much a month and neither will I. Help!! Any advice will be taken into consideration.

A.Eliminate alcohol, or do just wine and beer, or provide pitchers of a single intriguing cocktail, or make your own spiked punch. Make your guest book from blank book from discount book store (and a few pretty pictures cannibalized form engagement cards you've received.) Buy silverplated box at close-out store for ring-bearer instead of lacy pillow from bridal shop. (Or buy white Battenburg lace pillow from TJMaxx, wherever.) Same for silverplated cake knife (decorated handle with a hanging tassel made of 25 cents worth of embroidery floss.) Rather than a mall jeweler for rings, try antique stores, the jewelry district in a large city, family heirlooms (I know that sounds pretentious, but surprising numbers of people find that a grandparent, for instance, has an older ring they'd be proud to have you use or re-do,) or even Walmart for instance (if you just want plain bands, 14k is 14k.) Groom and men in wedding party wear own suits, with matching silk ties (or vests) (purchased from Sym's or other discount store,) instead of renting tuxes. Buy inexpensive personally relevant figurine (we used the lid of a porcelain jewelry box for 3.98) and spray-paint white for cake-topper. Or an appropriate Christmas ornament could work. or it might be fun to use the one your Mom and Dad used 30 years ago if it's still around. 19. We made centerpieces of pinked-edged swatches of fabric left over from flower girls dresses, with cobalt glass plates on top ($2 each at IKEA, they'll be our kitchen dinnerware...) with a paper doily and handfuls of Andes, York patties and Hershey's nuggets atop. Single use cameras in the center of each (got some nice photos from guests this way...) Or borrow silver serving pieces from friends (or buy "silver" mylar platters or bowls from a party store for $1.69 each,) and heap with bunches of grapes or other fruit, or pinecones, or Christmas ornaments; or "nests" of curled ribbon or Easter egg grass with a few truffles or strawberries or Easter eggs, or your guest favors or scrolls if you're giving them -- whatever is appropriate to your wedding and the season.
