Q.For my Relgion coursework I need to answer the following question : "Should the Cross of Christ be used as a fashion statement or does this take way from the message of Christ ?" It would be helpful if I had some peoples opinions,
A.Not just the cross is being used as jewelry, but all sorts of religious symbols, with no corresponding religious affiliation. I have seen Stars of David, Hindu Gods, all worn for decoration. This practice is just a symptom of something very wrong in our culture - Religion as Aesthetics - similar to the trend of treating Artisitc expression as a fundamental right without any requirement of artistic talent. The trivialization ,the devaluation of faith is similar to the trivialization, the policiticization of the arts. Artists like Mapplethorpe, get recognition by "daring" the authorities to criticize his work as not being art or as being bad art. So we now have Art as Political Lobby where any artistic standard is viewed as elitist and a threat to democracy. Meanwhile,I believe the attitude towards religion has been hi-jacked by culture and appropriated to replace Art. So religious icons have moved in to fill the void - the need for symbols of value. It shows me at least, that religion is not supplying this need - is not a force for cultural change. The cult of interest in Angels is a similar phenomenon - trying to bring value into the boredom and superificiality of our life-style with "sacred" events and supernatural phenomenon.
