Looking for Rings
Q.I'm looking for a ring/jewelry maker in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area. My SO and I are trying to find yellow or white gold celtic-style engraved rings for our wedding, and so far the only place that had decent looking ones was selling them for upwards of $400+ in yellow gold and $600+ in white gold because they said that the rings would "have to be custom-fitted (I don't understand why they can't just sell us the rings in our respective sizes, shouldn't they have a range of sizes for their rings?) and thus the extra $200-300 in cost". They had several beautiful models, but the prices seemed rather steep. Would any of you jewelry gurus know of a reliable and well-priced dealer or jewelry maker in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti, MI area who would have this type of ring? Another option we are considering is using some of my old gold jewelry to make into new rings --- is the difference in cost worth it? (I am not particularly fond of my old gold jewelry). Also, the jewelry is in different grades: 2 chains (14K), 1 ring (18K), 1 thick charm bracelet (24K). Can they mix those up or would we have to supply them with gold of one grade only?
A.There shouldnt be any problem in using the old gold. If it contains a lot of solder, you could have a problem with porosity..... If the designer/jeweler does his/her own casting, they may be willing to use your gold. You could save about $ 200.00 per ring in gold costs.
