Newbie Seaking Persona HelpQ.Being a new memeber of the SCA I'm not quite sure how to go about building my persona. I'd like to be celtic I think, seeing as my mundane name is allready celtic and that way I'll be able to keep it. I have not however found a period to suit what I'm trying to acomplish. I want my persona to be a celtic fighter (I'm a woman) and I dont know exatcly what sort of dress they would have worn. Would they were mens clothes? I've read that Celtic women were heavily into makeup and hair styles and loved bright fashions. The only thing is, I have never seen Celtic garb. Does anyone know where I would be able to get pictures of Celtic garb? I want my persona to be a young (since I'm also young) female fighter, not exactly rich, and perhaps who has been in a few wars. If anyone can suggest a time period for me I would be greatful. Infact, if anyone would like to help me one on one developing my persona I would be even more greatful. A."Celtic garb" covers an enormously diverse span of time and fashion. I get the sense that you're leaning towards an early medieval (or perhaps even Iron Age) context. I don't know that "Celtic women fighters" were an identifiable enough social group that they had a distinctive style of dress. In that context, whether you choose to wear men's or women's styles will pretty much be up to you, without the benefit of historic information. If you're leaning more towards Iron Age styles (e.g., Roman empire era or previous) then your best visual source will probably be depictions of Gauls in Roman sculpture. If you widen your search to include clothing in what is now Germany, there are a few extant clothing finds from around the 5th century that you might be interested in. (See Margarethe Hald's book on clothing finds in Danish/north German burials -- I'm not at home so I won't try for the precise title.) Hair and jewelry seem to be important focuses for all the Celtic cultures throughout time and place. The long t-tunic and some type of mantle are consistant as well. Assessories and sleeves and length and fabric and color are all more variable.
