Q.Custer finished West Point as last in the class and thus ended in cavalry judged by War Department as not qualified enough to go to the army elite. Wilson on the other hand was an engineer, thus regarded as more valuable to the army than Custer.
A.Except for Lee and MacArthur, it's difficult to find a high ranking West Point graduate who went on to be a great general. Most of them seem to come from the mid to lower rankings. I thought the high ranked graduates got the engineering positions, and infantry was where the lowest ranked were posted. Strangely, that means when there is a war the ones with the most experience commanding infantry, and thus the ones most likely to be quickly promoted to high rank and fame, will not be the ones from the top of the class. The engineers will also be the ones with the most lucrative job offers when their service terms expire, and so will have more reason to leave the army. Tr.., did you by any chance actually read my post??? I said that except for Lee and MacArthur it was difficult to find great generals who ranked high in their class at West, that most great generals have ranked in the middle or even near the bottom of their class, which certainly includes Grant and Eisenhower. I said nothing about astronauts, who I'd naturally expect to rank high in their classes, or Medal of Honor winners, etc.
