Club Jewelry Man

Q.a company that shall remain nameless just sent me a jewelry offer along those lines. I open all junk mail for two reasons. One to shred it, the other because money is sometimes inside (rarely, but it happens). I wanted to see the catch on this one, so I looked at it. They were offering a sterling silver amethyst ring, flanked by two cubic zirconias, for free, just pay $4 shipping and tax. I figured this would be your usual "With $100 purchase" crap, but nope, no purchase is required. However, by accepting the offer you are enrolling in what is basically a "jewelry of the month club", and they will send you a little card offering matching earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc. Is it just me, or is this a little disturbing? Maybe I'm too much of a romantic, but isn't this totally the wrong way to buy jewelry?

A.I bought a sapphire/diamond ring for my wife in Sattahip, Thailand when the town was 2 pigs and a hut, a Baht bus really charged a baht, and jewelers worked out of sort of motorized carts that ran between villages and Bankock - In this case, T Man Jewelers. I ordered the ring, $27, but unfortunately was unexpectedly relocated before delivery was made. I figured a write off, but when I got home some months later, my wife had the ring, just as ordered. The very nice lady who made the ring sent it ahead to my house when she wasn't able to locate me to take delivery. I don't think there is a line in this paragraph that would hold true today. And when my wife shows people that ring today, she leads with the story, not the stone count. On a more serious note than my initial post, yes, buying jewelry is a thoughtful purchase. It needs to be selected with care for someone very special, and it needs to have a better story to go with it than, "Honey, I got this really neato ring from my jewelry club today..." I don't think it's the money as much as the consideration and thought behind the purchase.
