Crystal Gem Stone Jewelry Store

Q.I am going to buy a ruby - a good quality one of about a carat -- emerald cut to put in a ring. Any advice as to how to buy the stone at a reasonable price? Is it better to visit a jeweller, and buy the ring ready made, or find the stone from a gem dealer and take it to a jeweller for the setting?

A.Here is what I would do: 1. Go to several jewelers and establish for yourself the price range of the stone (and ring) you are interested in buying and to familiarize yourself with different quality traits of rubies. 2. Go to a major gem and jewelry show (the International Gem Show is probably the biggest in the U.S.) and check out the loose stone dealers prices and quality based on what you have seen at the jewelry stores. You will also find dealers selling ready-made settings. 3. Make you choice based on price and quality. You may find it is less expensive to by from a jeweler than to buy the stone and ring separately from different dealers, or vice versa. I find that it is always cheaper for me to buy from the dealers at the show, but you may find differently
