Cz Bridal JewelryQ.my fears about a proposal are gone. My boyfriend proudly marched me to the jewelry counter at a store last week and asked my opinion on whether he should buy just the engagement ring or a complete set. Since it isn't our 1st time at this and we will not be having a big wedding, I told him I would like him to pick an inexpensive set. OK, I just want to get married that's what's important to me. Well, last night he told he he had gone to another jewelry store and looked at several and gosh they were expensive and I have too much on this charge card already, etc, etc. I really didn't need to hear all that. I reminded him that anyway after the wedding our debts, the rings, whatever, would belong to both of us and not just him. Dah, Oh yeah, I forgot about that, was his comment. He is this way because for the longest time he has been living with mom and has not had to make any major expenses. I have been a single mom supporting a family of 4 on my own for over 6 years. I know money is easy come easy go. Boy I hope I can break him of his money worries before he drives me crazy. This is just about the rings now. I believe the formal engagement will be announced at xmas and we will be married some time next year. I can't wait for the whinning about the wedding costs themselves to start to arise. Now really he's a super guy, I wouldn't trade him for the world. Gotta take the bad with the good, right. Any other super poor couples out there with ideas on cheap (but not too cheap) ring sets? A.I don't know how expensive your fiance meant by "gosh are they expensive" but some of the things I see in jewelry stores and catalogues just about give me a heart attack (I'm also a divorced mom -- of 2 -- and my money management style is perhaps a bit more liberal than it ought to be. . .) If it doesn't bother you, I'd recommend looking at CZ sets. Service Merchandise has some nice ones. I have read that good-quality ones approach the durability of diamonds and maintain their good looks comparably well. . .? (I stand open to correction if I am wrong on this!) They are HUGELY cheaper. If you *don't* care about traditional bridal sets, you can get really lovely things from places like Renfair on the Drag (if you're ever in Austin) -- local jewelers and artists and craftspeople make beautiful and unique items, in a pretty wide price range. Someone else commented on this but you probably do want to discuss your financial approach with your fiance pretty thoroughly -- you may very well already be doing this, of course. This is a big issue with my fiance and me because he's an accounting major, and, while not great with money, worries about it a lot. I have an attitude that, if I don't think about it, it isn't a problem (I know! I know! I'm working on it!!! and it really bugs me when he gets to carping about "we're broke, oh no, what are we going to do" etc. I don't like to hear that stuff; in my experience things do tend to work themselves out. . . another part of it is that he takes over the "job" of worrying about money to the extent that I don't worry about it nearly as much as I used to before we were together. Maybe if you occasionally express more worry about money than you feel it will help your fiance calm down a little -- part of the reason he gets worried might be because to him, you appear not to be concerned?
