Design A Class Ring
Q.Anyone know what this was about? I've never heard of freshman or sophmore purchasing class rings before. Was this just a gimmick to get Clark to be infected with red kryptonite?
A.My class bought our class rings in our sophmore year. We ordered them at the begining of the school year and got them a few months later. I ended up having to return mine because the stone kept breaking without even being taken out of the case. I had them repair it about six or seven times and finally had them just refund me my money. I then went to the local jewery store. Clark and pals are now Sophomores. I got my class ring Sophomore year. Near the end of our Freshman year, Jostens came and talked to our class about the various options and let us create a class design for one section of the ring ("U" for unity, talk about corny) after which we placed the orders and put down a deposit. The rings arrived shortly after the beginning of our Sophomore year and given out in a ring ceremony. We got ours toward the end of junior year; we had no choice. This was, um, 1969, and my incredibly controlling high school adminmistration had just started allowing end-of-term juniors to wear rings. The seniors resented it as a usurpation of their privileges. The ring seemed so important then, but its importance didn't last very long. Mine fell off my finger while I was helping to push a car out of a snowbank during a blizzard in Buffalo, NY in early 1971. I hardly missed it. My theory is that ring-buying time has been moved up to sophomore year in order to get more money to the jewelers more quickly. I remember that my ring cost $32. I gather they've gone up since.
