Non-diamond engagement rings?Q.I looked on the alt.wedding homepage to make sure this hasn't been covered, and there's only a link to the International Colored Gemstone Association, which doesn't really help. My fiance and I are looking for 'the ring', but I dislike diamonds. I have a couple of questions for everyone out here in alt.wedding land: 1) Can anyone share stories of finding non-diamond engagement rings? 2) Does anyone know the pre-diamond history of the engagement ring? I was surprised this wasn't in the alt.wedding homepage. I know the obsession with diamonds is mostly the result of a bunch of _really_ skillful 20th century ad campaigns, but what was the tradition before that? A.I'm not a jewelery person, but having gotten engaged, an engagement ring seemed appropriate. Shane does not like diamond rings, and has an affection for emerald (or so he thought). So... off we went with an ideal of a leaf pattern on the band with a lovely green emerald. What we found was that the colour we all believe is emerald is really quite rare in the stone, usually it has a much more blue or yellow cast to it. The lovely green ones are available, but at tremendous cost. So... we asked about this other green stone in the case. It was lovely... just the right colour, but way to large. So Judy (the designer) went on a hunt & found another, slightly smaller green garnet. And at MUCH less cost. The weight of gold in the band actually acounted for around 2/3rds of the cost. We're very happy with our purchase... and with the design we helped create. I strongly recommend their shop... and if you want something 'different' but you're not sure what... trying browsing the many photo-albums she has of the work that has been done in the shop.
