REC.CRAFTS.JEWELRY Frequently Asked Questions (AUTOMATED POSTING)Q.Are diamonds forever? A.i found a few points in the FAQ to be a little off in terms of facts, but the particularly glaring one is FAQ item 2.7) are diamonds forever? diamonds are very stable having been formed at extreme temperatures and pressures, actually they are so stable they can be left in jewelry while repairs are made with llame torches, with the exception of platinum with which extra care must be taken. diamonds do not develope carbon spots after 50years or 500years or 5000 years!!! there are plenty of diamonds that have been cut since that time and none whatsoever have developed carbon spots and wre not there before. the crsytalline structure of diamonds are so strong and perfect that it renders them the hardest minerals in nature. nothing comes close to the hardness of diamonds. Correction have already been made to FAQ Question 2.7. However, the consensus still seems to be that (sentamentality and advertising aside), diamond may be hard but they can chip and crack in the course of everyday wear. Furthermore, my discussions with physical chemists seem to be divided on this issue. As far as diamonds "being cut since that time", only diamonds within the last two hundred years were cut as a course of normal practice. Most diamonds of old were used in their uncut state. And as was discussed in a prior thread, diamonds are hard and strong, but they are not perfect in their strength. It is my honest opinion, that "diamonds are forever" is not only a trademark but a hyperbole and a clever form of advertising. Is 24K gold ever used for wedding/engagement rings?I've heard that gold-alloys are used instead of pure gold because of the soft nature of the metal, but how much of a problem is this really?
