Fine Religious Jewelry

Q.After thorough search at deja.com, it was apparent that the subject has not been recently discussed. I would be most appreciative if any of you folks would comment as to the current feelings of wearing Rosaries as jewelry. I'm doing some extensive historical research into the subject but would appreciate any comments or further leads you guys might have. I have noticed many "perky Goths" wearing Rosaries and on acquiring why' they were they said... "they're Koowel" yet it appears within the youth drug culture they are used as a protest or to 'diss' the establishment.

A.The wearing of the Rosary was a matter-of-fact piece of jewelry in the 15th century. Below is quoted from Page 112-116 Certainly it was not detrimental to their popularity that prayer beads constituted religious jewelry that even the most pious could wear. Chaucer's description, for instance, of the tasteful prioress Madame Eglantine, relates that she wore a set of small coral beads with green markers (gaudys) attached to a gold brooch. Some bead sets contained in filigree pomander that could be filled with perfume paste, a recipe for which can still be found in a verse by theMeistersinger Hans Folz (circa 1450-1515) To curve ostentation in wearing a fine religious jewelry, sumptuary laws specified what was not permitted. 15th century ordinance of the city of Nuremberg stipulated " no married or unmarried woman shall any longer wear a Pater Noster which is valued at more than 20 Rhenish guelders" least she'd be fine "the amount by which the Pater Noster exceeds the value of 20 guelders." The manner of wearing beads was also regulated they were, for example, to be worn around and neck or arm or on the belt but not hanging down in the back "uber den ars."
