Silver Ring-making books>?Q.Does anyone know of any good books or websites on how to make silver rings? My boyfriend really wants to get into it. Any help would really be appreciated! A.There are MANY quality jewelry making books. If you need more help (or tools, metal, etc.) feel free to contact me at Metalliferous (we sell stuff) at 888-944-0909 or e-mail me for more details. Books for fabrication - Indian Jewelry Making Vol 1 and Vol 2 by Oscar T. Branson. Yes, it is Indian jewelry, but the fabrication techniques are universal to all designs. Vol 1 has many rings in it For casting: Practical Casting by Tim McCreight. He doesn't discuss all that much about rings specifically, but any casting depends on the wax model used. Most wax catalogs have pages and pages of ring models. You can get a catalog from Bourget Bros. - www.ebourget,com. Also check out AU-Rus Explosion - www.nidlink.com/-bhanks. Bunch of weird stuff. Wire, molded or forged (or whatever it's called with silver)? There are some nice rings made with silver wires, both plain & patterned, that are fairly easy for beginners. Most can be done without special equipment, some require a torch (for soldering). Molded rings take more equipment-- don't know exactly what, but I remember that the list included several expensive and bulky items. I've seen rings made out of old silver coins, and bar silver-- beaten into shape on an anvil and/or heated in a blacksmiths' forge then pounded into shape. Sources of information: Lapidary Journal has projects; check their back issues for the kind you want (lapidaryjournal.com). The Wireworker is an on-line newsletter, with links to wire projects, as well as information re: materials, shows, and selling your work; the host also sells lesson plans/kits and materials for wire working (www.wire-working.com). Also check jewelrymaking.about.com-- click on the link to "metal" (on left of page), then on the "metalsmithing" link that comes up; or click on the link to "wire" on that first page. For hands-on classes, you might try checking with a local Gem & Minerals/Lapidary organization in your area, or check with local adult education or community collages as well.
