ANCW: what to wear for Indian wedding?

Q.not the wedding exactly, but the reception. We were invited to the wedding as well, but that kind of freaked Paul out, since we're being invited the week of the event by the sister in law of the bride (my coworker). Anyway, she told me that the dress was "formal". I expect her and many others there to be in a sari or other traditional dress. What do we wear? Paul does not have a suit, not having need of one since before we were married. A pair of dressy khakis, dark shirt and tie has got him through any events we've been to. What about me? Little black dress? I don't know if any of mine fit. I do have a long black velvet dress, with sleeves and 2 small rhinestone clips at the neck. I know this group (Gretchen?) will have some ideas...

A.You sound like you have the right idea. The Indian women there will likely be wearing saris, as you expected, or punjabis (long tunic over pants). As a rule, I find Indian women really like to dress up. The saris and punjabis will be silk and beaded and the women will be wearing plenty of jewelry. In this case, I think the timing of the event is probably irrelavent. Dress as if it were an evening wedding. So the little black dress or the velvet one you mentioned sound fine to me. FYI, Indian wedding colors are white, gold and red, so I'd probably avoid those colors, just to be safe. Like with any wedding, some brides are more touchy about that than others. The guys--Indian and otherwise--will probably be in suits. Some might show up in the Nehru jacket-style suit, but most will just have business suits. The khakis and no jacket might be a bit informal, but I'm not sure anyone would notice. It's too bad you don't live closer or I'd loan you one of my saris or punjabis. They are great fun to wear and I always get lots of complements. The Indian women think its so wild to see a caucasian in a sari.
