Engagement with no ring
Q.It's sad how rude people can be. Luckily for me (sort of =) we're students and live in a college town, so *everyone*'s poor! My most common reaction is "oh congratulations? Did you get a ring?".
A.I don't have one, because I don't like wearing rings and I'm afraid I'd take an engagement ring off and fiddle with it and leave it somewhere. He and I also think that we'd rather spend whatever money we'd have spent on an engagement ring on a nicer honeymoon, or more people at our reception, or something else important to us. I have had a similar problem with people's reaction to my engagement ring. When my boyfriend asked me he did not have a ring. He wanted to wait and let me pick it out, after all I'd be wearing it for the rest of my life and he wanted me to be happy with it. I did not want a diamond ring. I dislike how much money they cost and also the fact that men do not get diamond engagement rings (I want things to be equal!). A flashy diamond ring is ... well, just not me. He told me he would buy me any ring I desired (and he meant it, he could afford it)--I declined. Several of my co-workers, family and friends thought I was off my rocker. We went about 2-3 weeks before we decided what to do. At my request, I insisted that he not waste money on a piece of jewelry that would simply sit on my finger for the rest of my life--I'd rather have it go toward a home or setting up a college fund for our future children. Since we both dislike gold jewelry, we bought matching Celtic/Irish Claddagh silver rings ($35/each
