Jewelry making tools

Q.I am looking to have a workshop in my home but I am unsure of how to get started. I have a couple of great books which include all of the tools needed to make professional jewelry. I just don't know where I can get these tools. Nor do I know where I can find sheets of copper, silver and gold to work with. Does anyone have any suggestions?

A.Swap meets and yard sales are great places to start. You can find good hammers and files easily, especially if you aren't in a big hurry to assemble your tools. I picked up an old electric flat iron at a yard sale for $0.50, took it apart, and I'm still using it for a bench anvil. You might also find a torch top that screws on to a little propane tank quite cheaply. They don't give you much control over the flame for fine work but work well for learning. I managed to put together a decent, usable workshop initially for about $50. Of course, I soon discovered the local jewellery supply store and soon tripled that.
