Man Turquoise Jewelry
Q.Yesterday a young woman came by the house with her new baby,and her baby girl's name is Altabah... i was set to work on some silver jewelry, had made a few pices and cut some turquoise, abalone shell and coral and made by chance some ear rings and a silver locket for a picture. she needed a gift maybe two, then it was three and four since she was moving away and wanted to present something to some close friends of hers...the pieces made were sitting on my wooden bench with the tools and so I gathered them up and she took them away. The stones were pretty good and the coral ear rings were nice . She took them and those bits of indian jewelry are pretty nice and the lockets were made to hold a picture of small kids and looking at the empty drawers for the rings, bracelets, pendants and simplethings made, they are all gone, every one so it goes, but it was worth the smile on her face, since she and husband have no money. She offerred to pay, and so I let it go and told her to keep her money. That's my story. Any comments pr other stories to share with me???
A.I'm sure your jewelry will go on to have a 'life' of its own. I still wear a turquoise ring that was made for me when i was eleven years old. When i was in Arizona last year a Navajo man said, "You almost never see that kind of style any more." The ring was made by a Navajo woman who sat beside my mother night after night at a factory, they worked the graveyard shift and became friends. At christmas time, the woman and her husband made rings for my mother and father, my brother and me . My mother told her, "My daughter will want to know what everything means." So the woman told her about the color of the stone, how it might change in time (it did) and how the rope was to protect the spirit. The ring actually saved my life when i was 20. A crazy woman with a knife attacked me ... and when she had me down on the ground, she tried to crush my hand with the heel of her boot by jumping on it. But she crushed down on the ring instead and my bones didn't break and i was able to get away from her. If she had crushed my hand, that would have been the final thing, and i wouldn't have been able to get away to the woods. The ring was bent badly and even now it is not perfectly round any more. It has its 'scar' from that, i guess you could say. The turquoise was slightly greenish when it came to me, decades ago. But now it is very blue, the color of the sky in Arizona just around dusk. Since i was 20, i have not taken it off except for when i had to remove it to go in the sweat lodge and then once for an mri.
