Q.What if a teacher hangs a crucifix in their classroom? Watch out! You see, both sides in this case are up to their armpits in...yes. A foolish consistancy. You may claim to be protected by freedom of religion when they take away your jewelry. Does that mean you believe religious symbols belong in public schools? Crucifixes? the Bible as literature? moments of silence? Even the pledge of allegance? I'm not passing judgement here- I really have no firm belief in any direction on any of these subjects. However, I feel its important to see both sides. Its very important, Sooner or later, you'll be on the other side.
A.Most supreme court cases have time and time again come down on the side that a student/teacher must be allowed to wear personal items/make personal statements about religion without any fear of persecution. However, a school or teacher may not try to promote one religion over another or advocate any religious belief be it agnosticism, catholicism, hinduism or secular humanism. A school is allowed to teach students about different religious and study their respective religious writings as literature/history/culture. The supreme court as far i can recall have even allowed students to make religious statements at graduation ceremonies, etc. So the person that had their jewelry taken away should be allowed to wear their stars as openly as a christian with a cross and a jew with a star of david. Now if I could only convince my grandmother that my baby anhk earrings dont mean that i've joined a cult. Then again i'm having a hard time convincing her that just because i'm not married at age 23 doesn't mean that i'm a lesbian. *sigh* At least we have matching hair color, so she can't complain about it. bright red...blazing cranberry. My other grandma (the cool one) has been dyeing her hair black since the 30's.
